THE 51st ANNUAL DAYTIME EMMY AWARDS

2024 Daytime Emmys: General Hospital wins top honors and Dick Van Dyke wins hearts

Posted Friday, June 7, 2024 10:00:00 PM

The 51st Annual Daytime Emmys were handed out on June 7, 2024. It was a night of surprise, broken records, Idols, and a former chimney sweep who stole the show.

You'd be forgiven if you feel like we just had a Daytime Emmys ceremony. Due to a strike by the Writers Guild of America, last year's Daytime Emmys was pushed back more than six months. The gala for the landmark 50th Annual Daytime Emmys was held just before Christmas. This year's event was held in its more familiar June slot, though it was just 175 days since the last ceremony.

Regardless of when or where the ceremony is held, the Daytime Emmys recognize outstanding achievement in television programming and crafts. In short, it's daytime's biggest night.

The night was filled with mixture of both long-time favorite and newcomers to the world of daytime. And the boundaries of that world were truly stretched to become worldwide this year with the nomination of the long-running Australian soap, Neighbours in the Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Guest Performance categories.

"Tonight, we celebrated the remarkable achievements of daytime television's finest. Our broadcast was filled with unforgettable moments, including the recognition of Melody Thomas Scott and Edward J. Scott, shining examples of the enduring legacy and exceptional contributions within our industry," exclaimed Adam Sharp, President & CEO of NATAS.

The night was not only filled with idols, but also Idols -- American Idols. Contestants-turned-talk-show-hosts Jennifer Hudson and Kelly Clarkson were both in attendance. There was also a bevvy of shirtless men, a demonstration of Italian cuisine, and a somber reminder of the beloved members of our daytime family that we've lost.

A whole lot of history was also made, with General Hospital's record-setting 17th win in the Outstanding Daytime Drama Series category, Hollywood icon Dick Van Dyke becoming the oldest Daytime Emmy winner in history, and The Young and Restless star Courtney Hope's first win serving as three of the night's more memorable highlights.

The ceremony was broadcast live on CBS, the 18th time CBS has broadcast the Daytime Emmys. If you missed the ceremony, it is available for on-demand streaming on Paramount+.
