General Hospital is about to engage in a storytelling experiment. The ABC soap has reached an agreement with Josh Griffith to have the Emmy-winning writer pen scripts for General Hospital on a trial basis.
The addition of Griffith to the General Hospital writing team brings about a reunion between Griffith and the show's head writer, Bob Guza, Jr. Along with the late Aaron Spelling, Guza and Griffith created the short-lived NBC soap, Sunset Beach. While the soap was on just two years, Griffith picked up two Daytime Emmys for Outstanding Writing Team during that time.
Griffith has been a writer for daytime television for more than 20 years. As a result, this is not be the first time that Griffith will be working as a script writer in daytime. From 2005 through 2006, Griffith served as a script writer on As the World Turns under then-head writer Hogan Sheffer. He also served in the same capacity for three years on Santa Barbara.
Griffith has also worked as the head writer on a pair of shows. From 1994 to 1995 and again from 2003 to 2004, Griffith helmed One Life to Live. Griffith earned a third Emmy during his time at One Life to Live. More recently, during the strike by the Writer's Guild of America, Griffith opted to take the "financial core" so that he could work as head writer of CBS's The Young and the Restless. Griffith came under fire in August 2008 when, according to claims by the WGA, Griffith overstepped his authority as executive producer and began "tinkering" with Maria Arena Bell's writing.
About a month later, Griffith was removed as executive producer of Y&R.
A General Hospital spokesperson tells Soap Central that the show has no comment at this time.
It's unclear at this time when Griffith's first scripts will hit the airwaves.
